The FIRST ENGLISH EVANGELICAL
LUTHERAN CHURCH has served downtown Wheeling since 1860.
Organized in a day when all of its members lived within walking distance
of the church, it became the first
English-speaking Lutheran Church in the
Ohio Valley.
Since then, the city has grown up around us, and while our church has remained grounded in the Word of
God and his Sacraments, our ministries have changed with the times and the changing
world outside our doors. God has called us to minister to the city
and we believe our downtown ministry
addresses the area's present
needs and is vital to the city.
The church strives to maintain an authentic Christian witness in the
heart of the city: a witness that is faithful to Holy Scripture and
to the historic Lutheran Confessions. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is
clearly at the center of its life, providing direction, comfort and
hope for the people of God.
If you are looking to receive God's Word in a warm and loving atmosphere,
we welcome you. Singles, couples, and families alike find a special
place within our diverse congregation. People choose our church because
they enjoy worship and fellowship with others from widely varying
backgrounds and heritage, each bringing his/her
own special talents and contributions. The members of our congregation
come from all areas of Wheeling and its surrounding communities.
